Biography: Margaret Colby Butler was born the illegitimate child of Bela Lincoln Butler, Jr. and Sarah Colby. She was raised by her Colby relatives, but always went by the name Margaret Butler. On November 24, 1831, she married Capt. Martin Putnam (who died May 6, 1845). On April 11, 1850, Mrs. Margaret (Butler) Putnam married Holland Severance (who died October 12, 1854 in Hillsboro, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire).
