William was born in upstate Oneida County, New York. He moved from New York stopping in Michigan on his way to northeastern Illinois as verified by his grandson W.H. Birdsell's narrative "Trails Lead West." William settled in Chemung (McHenry County) Illinois. He married Irena Russell in Chicago in 1843, a fact later verified by William in a 1915 letter he wrote to the Bureau of Pensions. Original records of that marriage were lost in the 1871 Chicago Fire.

Civil War Veteran. Enlisted in Company D, Iowa 6th Cavalry Regiment on 09 Dec 1862. Mustered out on 17 Oct 1865 at Sioux City, IA. Sources: Roster & Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of Rebellion; Tombstone Records of Greene County, Iowa
