Born in Bethel, Oxford County, Maine, he attended law school on the East coast and moved to Salem, Oregon to practice law in 1851. He was appointed by the Secretary of War to audit the Indian war expenses of Oregon and Washington in 1856. He was a delegate to the convention which framed the constitution of Oregon in 1857, and was elected as a Democrat to the 35th Congress serving February to March of 1859. La Fayette Grover was the Governor of Oregon from 1871 to 1877, then served in the US Senate from 1877 to 1883. He died in Portland, Oregon. (bio by: RB)
