ಌڿڰۣಌಌڿڰۣಌ My Sister ಌڿڰۣಌಌڿڰۣಌ
Thank you to everyone who places a token on my sisters page, your kindness is very much appreciated.
I didn't know my sister until I was 31 years old. Infact, it was a shock to know that I did have a sister.
Cecelia Mary Garner (Jane) was born in 1951 To my mum, Hilda Mary Garner. Mum went into a catholic home for unmarried mothers in Cumbria, England. At the time, being a single mother was looked down on, not something you did. Unfortunately, my mum couldn't keep her, and the Nuns thought it would be best if mum gave her up for adoption. Jane was then 3 and a half years old. My mum was not allowed to know who had adopted her, nor search for her. My mum said to me later on that she tortured herself by keeping Jane as long as she did, but I can NOT imagine what she went through having to give up her daughter.
Then, in 1957 she married my dad. By then it had been a few years since Jane had been adopted. They both tried to find out where Jane was. Dad would have brought her up as his own, being the kind gentleman he was. All to no avail, Cecelia Mary (Jane)could not be found.
In 1992, My mum had the shock of her life. Someone from an agency called her at home to say that a woman had been looking for her and gave the details. My mum nearly dropped the phone! The three year old daughter she had to give up for adoption, was looking for mum!. Later on mum told me that I had a sister, you could have knocked me down with a feather!
The adoptive parents of Cecelia Mary had changed her first name to Jane but kept her second name of Mary. Mum was overjoyed to see her daughter. she said to me later that she would have loved just to have the chance to stand at the end of her road watching her grow up. Both mum and Jane had a wonderful 5 years together before mum died in Hospital at the age of 68.
at the beginning of 2003, my sister told me she had been diagnosed with Lung cancer She was having chemo to try and shrink the tumour. We were all in shock. Then dad went into hospital and The doctors told us that because of dads chronic obstructive airways disease they couldn't operate on a blockage in his bowel. That had been caused by a hernia that had not been corrected. A week later, dad died on the 1st of July.
Jane came to his funeral. she called him dad which was lovely, because he was a lovely caring man, a gentleman. She looked very ill then. The following Christmas, The specialist told Jane that there was nothing more they could do for her. and in February, six months after dad, Jane Collapsed and died at her home after suffering a coughing fit. She had just finished her night shift at a call centre. My niece who was 13 at the time, found her on the bedroom floor. No child should have ever had to witness what Cheryl did. The Paramedics where called but to no avail.
My sister was a very courageous Woman, she was so ill, but carried on working til the day she died. She was 51 years old.
As well as Her step sister (me) and brother (Peter), Jane left a 13 year old daughter Cheryl, and a 19 year old son Martyn, and her Husband John. I was told at Janes funeral that I was very like my sister, I was flattered, I just wished I had been able to get closer to her.
