Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1849 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, at the outbreak of the Civil War, he became a Captain on the staff of Major General John C. Fremont. He was later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and named to the staff of Major General Samuel P. Heintzelman. Towards the end of the war he was assigned as an Assistant to the Provost Marshal General, in charge of Mustering and Disbursing. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He retired from the United States Army in 1893 with the rank of Colonel.
