Petroleum Geologist. He was a prominent oilman, known as the founder of applied geophysics in the petroleum industry and the father of American geophysics. In 1919, DeGolyer organized the formation of the Rycade Oil Company which established the petroleum exploration in many US States. He was director of the American Petroleum Institute for more than twenty years and a founder of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He also was a member of the Geological Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science and the British Institute of Petroleum. He became the president of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1952. After suffering from aplastic anemia for years, he took his own life at age 70.
