On the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1, 1863) he first led his regiment in the hard fighting near Oak Hill, then assumed command of the First Brigade of the 2nd Division of the I Corps after a succession of commanding officers were wounded or captured. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on August 1, 1864 for "gallant conduct in the battles of the Wilderness and Spottsylvania Court House, Va.", and Major General, US Volunteers on April 1, 1865 for "gallant conduct in the batle of Five Forks, Va., in an energetic assault of the enemy on the Ford Road".
