Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated from The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and was commissioned as an officer in the artillery, seeing action in the subsequent 2nd Seminole War in Florida, and in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Captain in the 2nd United States Regular Artillery and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in April, 1861. He commanded batteries at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Fort McHenry Baltimore, Maryland and Fort Pickens, Pensacola, Florida. Promoted Colonel of the 4th United States Regular Artillery in August 1863, he was in command of the defenses of Washington D.C. for the remainder of the war. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865. He remained in the Regular Army as commander of the 4th United States Artillery until retiring on January 10, 1877. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
