Private, Company E, 7th US Cavalry. Killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, 25 June 1876, along with General George A. Custer and most of the 7th Cavalry.
Born in Ireland, he immigrated to the US, and on 9 Dec 1862, he enlisted in the 12th Massachusetts Artillery, remaining until his discharge on 25 July 1865. He reenlisted on 15 September 1866 in Company I, 35th US Infantry, and was honorably discharged on 15 Sept 1869. He again reenlisted on 27 Oct 1869 in Company F, 22nd US Infantry, and was honorably discharged on 14 July 1874. On 19 Dec 1874, while in Boston, he enlisted in the 7th Cavalry. In 1875, he was court-martialled for being drunk on guard duty, quitting his post and for being absent for seven hours. Punishment was confinement at hard labor for three months and loss of $10 pay per month for 12 months (Private's pay at that time was only $12 per month). He was 5' 6" tall, had grey eyes, dark brown hair, and a fair complexion. His father, Andrew Boyle, received a pension of $8.00 per month following his son's death. His body was buried in a mass grave, now marked with the Battle Monument on Last Stand Hill.
