The son of Joseph & Mary A. (McGowan) Gantt, he married Catharine Smith September 27, 1855, and fathered Henry Clay (b. @1857), Clara E. (b. 09/03/58*, d. 12/16/58), Laura E. (b. 02/24/60), Amos L. (b. @1862), Mary A. (b. @1866). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Centre Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 2 as a sergeant with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
