My grandmother, Mabel M. Elliott, daughter of William Almarine Elliott says that he lived on an inheritance passed down to him by his father and mother (Samuel Bell Elliott and Mary Jane Haggard) from the sale of properties owned by the Elliott family in Cumberland County, Kentucky.
I believe it was for his "share" of the land the Elliotts owned prior to the Civil War. The Elliott family owned many slaves in that area and prospered until the Civil War. After the Civil War the Elliotts sold out and moved mostly to Texas to live among their southern sympathizer neighbors.
William Almarine Elliott truely lived off the inheritance and lived very poorly in Texas, Arizona and eventually in New Mexico. They are both buried in the cemetery at Estancia, New Mexico.
Notes by Gary L. Foster on 23 March 2005. William Almarine Elliott lived 83 years, 8 months and 1 day. From his Certificate of Death and William's wife Annie they had just moved to Estancia 3 years before he died. In 1947 they lived in Birch, Arizona with his daughter Clara Miller.
From Census records we learn that William A. Elliott age 36, was married 8 years, born in Kentucky, both parents born in Kentucky and his occupation was that of a farmer. Wife, Annie E. age 27, 3 children born and all alive, she was born in Louisiana, mother born in Missouri and Father born in Arkansas, 3 children & Willie Clara, age 15.
Photo taken before moving to Birch, Arizona Sitting in the doorway of the home they shared with Clara & Willis Miller. William was tall and Annie was short. Annie gave the factual information on her husband William Almarine Elliott.
