It's beauty that captures your attention; personality which captures your heart."

My mother was the first child born to the marital union of James Clarence Doyle and Aszeline 'Gertrude' Goins, in Orleans Parish, New Orleans, Louisiana. According to her Aunt Eloise, My Great Aunt, "she was a beautiful baby...She looked like a doll!"

Her formative, educational, years where spent in Orleans Parish, New Orleans. She and her family eventually migrated to California during the 1950s, settling in Oakland, on Fremont Street. She was able to complete her middle school and high school education in Oakland. During the early 1950s, she met my Dad and began a romance that would last her lifetime. They married in 1955 when my father was temporarily home from "bootcamp."

The memories that I have of my mother are of her quiet, patient, and loving demeanor. I also remember the joy she had in planning and executing our childhood birthday parties. During this period, my father, who considered himself an amateur photographer, made 8mm home movies. I also remember how she laughed, and the sound of her laughter and how she loved to dance, especially to the classic sounds of Motown records. I also recall her love of the artists, Aretha Franklin and Nancy Wilson, whose songs were played tirelessly on the living room stereo. Two songs in particular have stayed in my memory: "Guess who I saw today" and "Respect." I also recall the tremendous, personal sacrifices she made for her beloved children.
My mother died quietly in her sleep after a long, debilitating illness.

Mom, you are deeply missed.

When I come to the end of the road.
and the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little but not too long
and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take.
And each must go alone
it's all a part of the master plan
A step on the road to home.

If when you are lonely and sick of heart.
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrow in doing good deeds.
Miss me, but let me go.
