After her husband's death in 1865 Helen decided not to vacate their quarters at Fort Monroe as was the custom, but remained indefinitely. At the time of his death the couple had four daughters in their infancy. The residence became known as the DeRussy House. In November 1891 she left Fort Monroe and moved to New York.

Helen was Rene's fourth wife with whom he had four daughters. The oldest was Laura deRussy born in 1853. She married Washington Lafayette Berry. Rene, it is thought, had four children each with four consecutive wives.
Helen Maxwell was daughter of William Maxwell, who was a graduate of Yale.
