| Birth: | Feb. 16, 1919 Winnfield Winn Parish Louisiana, USA | | Death: | May 21, 2009 Maryville Madison County Illinois, USA |  Mary Helen Wayant Smith [sic Smith Wayant], age 90, of Glen Carbon, died at 12:20 p.m., on Thursday, May 21, 2009, in Maryville. She was born on Feb. 16, 1919, in Winnfield, La., the daughter of the late Charles L. and Mattie Hooper Smith. She married John "Jack" Wayant on Nov. 20, 1944, in Alexandria, La. He preceded her in death on Sept. 8. 2000.
She is survived by a daughter: Cathy Ward of Glen Carbon; a son: John Wayant and wife Pattie of Boulder, Colo.; grandchildren: May Hughes, Kelly Wesley, Brandon and Jon Ward, Chelsey Hunnicut and Cassidy Wayant; great grandchildren: Courtney and Taylor Lybarger, Brooke and Allison Wesley, Ellie and Grace Hughes, Jackson Ward and Raliegh Hunnicut.
Along with her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by a brother: Charles Hooper Smith.
Mrs. Wayant was a member of Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville. She was a very avid golfer and graduated from the Louisiana Tech College with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education. She was a homemaker.
There will be a gathering at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Monday, May 25, at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road, in Glen Carbon. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, May 26, at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Troy, with Monsignor Virgil Mank officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Cystic Fibrosis. Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon is in charge of arrangements.
