Thomas Alfred Johnston, age 85, died September 1, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Franklin County, Alabama on September 25, 1919. His parents were William Arthur and Mattie Kent Johnston. He moved to Arkansas in 1937. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Alfred owned and operated Johnston's Service Station in Elaine for 40 years. He was a member and deacon of Elaine Baptist Church. He had been a member of the Elaine City Council, Tri-County Fair Board, Kiwanis, American Legion, and Mozart Hunting Club. He loved to hunt, fish, and was an avid coon hunter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Thomas Alfred "Sonny" Johnston, Jr.; and his brother, Cleatous, Clayton, and Hollis Johnston. Surviving brothers are Robert, Aaron, Charles (Violet Jo) and Bob (Dorothy) Johnston, all of Elaine. Surviving sister is Robie (John) Permenter of Vilonia.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fay Daughety Johnston; four sons: Billy "Bo" (Sara) Johnston of DeWitt; Don (Micki) Johnston of Clarksville; Joe (Janet) Johnston of Apopka, Florida, and Tony (Nina) Silva of Elaine.
Other survivors include his grandchildren; Jeff (Toni) Johnston of Batesville; Jon (Felicia) Johnston of Sheridan; Al (Palmer) Johnston of Metairie, Louisiana; Laura Johnston of Rogers, Marcus Silva of Indianola, Mississippi; Jil (David) Graham of Deland, Florida; Jenifer (Rolf) Moan of Portland, Oregon; and Jessica (Alex) Brenes of Miami, Florida. He is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Active pallbearers include grandsons Al Johnston, Jeff Johnston, Jon Johnston, and Marcus Silva and nephews Sam Popham and Johnny Johnston. Honorary pallbearers are deacons of Elaine Baptist Church.
Services will be conducted at Elaine Baptist Church at 10:00 Monday morning by Rev. Harold Danley, and Rev. Luke Watson. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in West Helena. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena.
