Mrs. Joan Feenstra, age 88 of Lynden, died at a Lynden adult care home on Tuesday, April 12, 2005.
Joan was the daughter of Harry (off.: Hielke) and Anna (Boxum) Voetberg, who came in 1896 to the USA, and was born in Topeka, Kansas on October 27, 1916. From Kansas her family moved to South Dakota where she grew up. In 1933 the Voetberg family moved to the Rock Valley area, Sioux County, Iowa.
From South Dakota she went to Michigan where she met and married Jake Hengeveld in 1939. They lived primarily in the Grand Rapids area and following Jake's death in 1969 was married to John Feenstra in Grandville, on August 2, 1971. Following their marriage they moved to Lynden.
Mrs. Feenstra was a member of the Third Christian Reformed Church and was well known for her oil paintings and beadwork lampshades.
Joan was preceded by her husband John in 1996 and is survived by son Jim Hengeveld of Seattle and Bonnie and husband Mike Brunett of East Jordan, MI.; step-children Marilyn Bos of Coloma, MI., Alvina and husband Rich Korthuis and Wendell and wife Lois Feenstra of Lynden; thirteen grand and nine great-grandchildren; a sister Helen Scholten of Rock Valley, Iowa and numerous other relatives.
Visitation hours will be from 1 to 9 pm on Thursday, April 14, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.
Graveside services were conducted on Friday, April 15, at 1:15 pm in Monumenta Cemetery followed by funeral services at 2:00 pm in the Third Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Pastor Dick Vriesman officiating.
