As a singer, one of his hit songs was "Catfish John", which reached the country Top 20 in 1972. As a songwriter, he is most famous for co-writing "Act Naturally", a song that was recorded by both Buck Owens and The Beatles. He was known by many as "the big man with the big heart" for both his girth (over 300 pounds) and pleasant, unselfish demeanor both on and off stage.
