Lulu "Lou" May Hout
Birth: in New York
Death: day: 29th in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York

In 1880, 4 year old Lulu is living in Concord, Erie, New York, with her father, Jacob Hout, who is a farmer and mother Mary and siblings 6 year old Albert and 2 month old Georgi. Her paternal grandparents were recorded as being born in France and maternal grandparent born in Germany.

In 1892, the family has moved to Mansfield, Cattaraugus, New York, where 47 year old Jacob is still farming alongside his 38 year old wife Mary, and children: Albert 19, Lulu 17, Frank 13, Georgia 10, John 8, Glenn 5, Fred 3.

Lulu married Berton T. Finch around 1893.

The 1900 census lists them living in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. Lulu is 24 and lists that she has had 2 children with only 1 living. Her 28 year old husband, Berton Finch; daughter 6 year old Ellen M Finch, and 17 year old sister Georgia Hout are living with her. Her husband's occupation is cutter (Hefter). They own their mortgaged home. Siblings are living next door.

In the 1910 census, they are still in Little Valley, and Ellen is only child. Lulu works in a restaurant, and Burton in a pool room.

In 1920, Lulu is listed as married, but she is the head of the house on River St., in Salamanca running a boarding house and has a roomer 19 year old Margaret Price. Ellen Finch is now married to Earl Evans, and they have a daughter Margaret.

In 1930, Lulu (listed as divorced) is living with her daughter's family on Fairmount Avenue in Salamanca, and (widowed) She is working as a saleslady in a dress shop. John Ahrens lives around the corner on Clinton Street with seven of his kids...are on the same census page.

In the 1931 Salamanca, New York Directory Lulu is listed as widow of Burton Finch working as a clerk living at 29 Fairmont Ave in Salamanca, NY (There is a Berton Finch that marries Inez and is listed in the 1925 New York Census, 1930 and 1940 censuses)

Then in 1940, "Lulla" Ahrens is John's widow, living with four of John's children from his first marriage, and the Evans are still on Fairmount. Lula has a 5th grade education. She owns a $4000 home. All the children are working in retail grocery.
