MAN MISSING OR DROWNED
Son of Captain Bell, of the Steamer Ruth
Probably Fell Overboard and Drowned at Sidney this Morning.
About six o'clock this morning Ira Bell, a son of Capt. Bell, of the O. R. & N. Steamer Ruth, was either drowned or is otherwise missing while the steamer was at the mouth of the Santiam near Sidney. The young man was about 30 years of age, and has for the past year been acting as watchman on his father's boat. This morning about 6 o'clock he went down from the cabin and into the hold. He was known to have come up from the hold, but has not been seen since and it is believed he may have fallen from the ladder leading to the cabin deck, as it is built on the edge of the boat.
An unfruitful search was at once made, but no trace of the missing young man could be found. Men have been stationed all along the river on the lookout while the boat went on to Corvallis, returning to Salem this afternoon.
