Mrs. Eelke Portinga (obituary)
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Eelke Portinga (Poortinga), whose death occurred at her home, 1213 Fifth Street West, Willmar, Minnesota Thursday afternoon April 28, 1939, following an illness of several years, the greater part of last year having seen her confined to her bed, were held Monday afternoon. Services were held at the home at 2 o'clock and at the cemetery at Prinsburg at 3:30. Wm. J. Ayotte and S. O. Susag of the Church of God conducted the rites. Two selections were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wubbels and one song was sung by Mrs. Frank Ayotte and daughter Mavis.
There were many beautiful floral offerings attesting to the esteem and love in which Mrs. Portinga was held by those who knew her.
The pallbearers were the six eldest sons, Fred, John, Riner, Peter, Arthur and Richard Portinga.
Here from a distance to attend the services were Peter Portinga, Mrs. Peter Hellenga and Mrs. Dick Portinga and two daughters, Ollie and Marie, all of Three Oaks, Michigan.
Sophia Hellenga was born in South Holland, Illinois, April 24, 1864. With her family she went to Three Oaks, Michigan, where her girlhood was spent and where she grew to womanhood, artending the common schools. She became the bride of Mr. Eelke Portinga in November 2, 1884, at Three Oaks.
Mr. Portinga left Michigan early in 1886, coming to Prinsburg, Kandiyoh County where he prepared a home and where in May of that year, he was joined by Mrs. Portinga. In this community, most of their life was lived on a farm.
Mrs. Portinga was a housekeeper of the finest type. Despite the fact that she was a busy mother, she seemed never to lose heart, for love was to keep her a supreme virtue.
