William Bodie Whitney was son of Mamie S. Gilbert and Swepson T. Whitney.
Mr.. Whitney retired from the Army with the rank of Lt. Col. and was one of World War II most decorated soldiers with several awards, including the Combat Infantry Badge1 the Bronze Star (multiple awards), the
Silver Star (multiple awards1 the Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Service Cross.
Whitney served in the armed forces during World War II and during the Korean War.
Upon his retirement, Whitney returned to Wayne County and worked with the forestry department for a short time. He later became interested in education and accepted positions as a counselor in various Alabama schools. He later accepted the position of assistant principal at Wayneaboro Elementary School where he was
extremely popular with faculty and students alike.
