| Birth: | Apr. 22, 1818 | | Death: | May 14, 1882 |  Civil War Union Major General, US Congressman, Wisconsin Governor. A successful Wisconsin lawyer, in 1855, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth, Thirty-fifth, and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. At the start of the Civil War, he declined to be a candidate for re-nomination and was appointed Colonel of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry. In February, 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General, was advanced to Major General in July, 1862, and served with distingistion until his resignation in May, 1865. After leaving the army, he was elected to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving 1867 to 1871 and in 1872, he was elected Governor of Wisconsin, serving until 1874.
