| Birth: | Nov. 3, 1826 | | Death: | Dec. 12, 1867 |  Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Kingsville, Ohio, he was a gunsmith when he enlisted as a Private into the 45th Illinois Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War. Rising through the ranks, he was elected the regiment's Colonel and commanded his Illinois troops in Tennessee and the Vicksburg, Mississippi campaigns. Promoted Brigadier General in August 1863, he took command of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, XVII Corps which fought in northern Georgia and later in Tennessee. When the war ended, Maltby remained in the Regular Army and served as the City of Vicksburg's military governor. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
