At the start of the Civil War, he was a successful banker in St. Louis and a Colonel in the 33d Missouri Regiment, National Army. Promoted Brigadier General in 1862, he participating in the seizure of Camp Jackson and served the remainder of the war as the Union Home Guards commander. He was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. After the war he was assistant commissioner in the management of the Freedman's Bureau of Abandoned Lands in Kentucky and Tennessee. Clinton was the presidential candidate for the Prohibition Party in 1888. He came in third place behind Benjamin Harrison, who won, and Grover Cleveland. His mother was Lydia Aldrich Fisk.
