He was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced the practice of in Detroit, Michigan. In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel in the 42nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, in July 1861. He was promoted Colonel of the 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, in October, 1861 and appointed Brigadier General in November, 1862. He resigned in April, 1863 and resumed the practice of law until his death.
