At the beginning of the Civil War he was a academicals educator when he enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry and was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel. He commanded the 3rd Michigan in engagements at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill and after the second battle of Bull Run was promoted Colonel. He was placed in command of a Division with the Army of the Potomac, which engaged at Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg where he was seriously wounded. In June, 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General and remained with the Army of the Cumberland until the war's end. For his war service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on April 8, 1865 and served as commandant of the Soldiers' home at Grand Rapids, Michigan, after the war.
