He graduated from West Point in 1849 and before the Civil War, served as a infantry officer on the frontier. In October, 1861, he was commissioned Brigadier General in command of a division for the Armies of the Ohio and the Cumberland. He fought at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga and in the Atlanta Campaigns. For his service at the Battle of Nashville in December, 1864, he was brevetted Major General of US volunteers.
