William Henry Seward, Jr
Birth: Jun. 18, 1839
Death: Apr. 26, 1920

Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was in part ownership of the Bank in Auburn when joined the 138th New York Infantry regiment as a Lieutenant Colonel. In September 1862, the 138th New York was assigned to garrison duty for the Washington defenses. The regiment was re-designated the 9th New York Heavy Artillery under Seward's command were assigned to Fort Foote, to protect the water approach to Washington. In 1863, he was ordered to report to the Army of the Potomac and Seward fought at North Anna and Cold Harbor. He was promoted to Colonel in command of the regiment in June, 1864 and his regiment was sent to delay Confederate General Jubal Early's drive on Washington. In September, 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General in command of the 1st brigade, 3rd division in the Department of West Virginia. He resigned in June, 1865 and returned to the banking industry. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
