Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1837 and was selected as one of the original officers in the newly created U.S. Army Corps of Topographic Engineers. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned Colonel in command of the 23rd Ohio Infantry and saw action in Virginia. Promoted Brigadier General in October 1862, he commanded a Division of the IX Corps during the Maryland Campaign and at the Battle of Antietam. During actions on February 3, 1864, he was captured by Confederate guerrillas from the 16th Virginia Cavalry and taken prisoner. He was prisoner exchanged toward the end of the war and was honorably mustered out of the Army in August 1865. After war, he was the U.S. Consul to Prince Edward Island and a Professor of Mathematics.
