| Birth: | Jun. 6, 1840 | | Death: | Dec. 17, 1876 |  Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He was a student at Harvard, when he enlisted in the 4th Massachusetts Volunteers at the outbreak of the Civil War. Commissined a Captain in the 20th Massachusetts Infantry, he lost a leg at Yorktown, during the Peninsular Campaign in early 1862. When recovered, he become Colonel of the 49th Massachusetts in November 1862 and took part in the capture of Fort Hudson in July, 1863. During the Overland Campaign, Bartlett led the 57th Massachusetts at the Battle of the Wilderness and was appointed Brigadier General in June, 1864. At the Battle of the Crater, he was taken prisoner and placed in Libby Prison. After his prisoner exchange, he was put in command of the IX Corps and led with distinction until the end of the war. For gallant and meritorious services, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he engaged in business with the government owned Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia.
