Prior to the Civil War, he graduated from West Point as an infantry officer in 1847 and served in the Mexican War. In 1861, he was a Captain in the Union 4th Infantry and served in the Peninsula Campaign. Promoted Colonel of the 92nd New York Infantry in May, 1862, he fought at Seven Pines, Kinston and Goldsboro. For the remainder of the war, he commanded draft depots and other general commands. For duty and services, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
