Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1856 and was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 1st Cavalry At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was Captain in the 6th US Cavalry and engaged in actions during the Virginia Peninsular Campaign. In March 1863, he was promoted Colonel in command of the 5th Kentucky Cavalry and commissioned Brigadier General Chief of Cavalry in the Department of the Ohio, October 18, 1863. He participated in the actions at Blue Lick Springs, Lenori and at the Siege of Knoxville he was mortally wounded on November 18, 1863 and died the next day. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
