Johann Becker was the oldest son born to Christian Becker and his first wife (name unknown) in Peterstal, South Russia. He immigrated to the United States in 1884 and settled in the vicinity of Scotland, Bon Homme County, Dakota Territory. There he met and married Anna Benz. They then migrated to and homesteaded and farmed in the area near Streeter in what would become North Dakota.

Johann and Anna were the parents of 15 children, 9 of whom lived to adulthood- Elizabeth, Barbara, Katherina, John, Fred, Carolena, Christina, Margaretha and Annie.
