Oral family history passed down by Hermina Faul Benoit, oldest child of Marie Louise Daigle, always claimed that Louise was born in Batson, Texas and was the daughter of Azema Leger and Louis Daigle.
The story is that Azema was homesick for her family in Church Point and constantly begged Louis to take her back to Louisiana. Louis tired of Azema's whining and finally agreed. He escorted the family across the Sabine River and said, "I have done what you asked. You are back in Louisiana. I am going back to Texas!" Louis left Azema to find her own way back to Church Point.
There are documents which suggest this story is true. The 1870 census of Batson, Texas shows Azema living with her children from her first marriage to Alfred Richard. She is identified as "Azama Lacy" and the census taker spelled the children's last name "Rishaw." In the 1880 census, Azema is living with her sister, Melasie, in Church Point. With Azema are two little girls, Louise and Adeline, who are identified as "orphans." In Louise's marriage record, she identified her parents as Louis Daigle and Azema Leger. Louis Daigle's parents were Louis Daigle and Adeline Lejeune. There is no baptismal record for Louise Daigle in Southwest Louisiana Records.
