| Birth: | Feb. 21, 1802 | | Death: | May 23, 1882 |  Civil War Union Brevetted Major General. Born in Dumfries, Virginia, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1820, was commissioned an officer of artillery, served in the Mexican War and was brevetted a Major for gallantry there. At the start of the Civil War, he was a member of the ordnance board when made Lieutenant Colonel in August, 1861 and was in charge of Washington arsenal until 1863. In September 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General chief of ordnance, US Army Washington D.C. and served until he retired from active duty in September, 1864. For long and faithful services, he was brevetted Major General US Army on March 13, 1865.
