Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1850 and for ten years, served on the Western frontier, fighting in skirmishes involving Native Americans. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was serving as a Cavalry Captain, when he joined General Nathaniel Lyon's troops in Missouri and took part in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. In September 1861, he was commissioned Colonel of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry and took command of a division of the Army in Arkansas. On March 7, 1862, at the Battle of Pea Ridge, he was wounded three times but refused to leave the battlefield until he secured the victory. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in that battle and was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers. After the Civil War, Carr served in the 5th and 6th Cavalry on the Frontier from 1868 to 1891 and was known as a experienced Indian fighter.
