William Thomas Clark
Birth: Jun. 29, 1831
Death: Oct. 12, 1905

Civil War Union Brigadier General, Brevet Major General of Volunteers. A native of Connecticut, he had practiced law in New York and Iowa before entering the military. After initial service in Missouri with his regiment he was appointed to staff duty and fought at Shiloh, Corinth, and through the Vicksburg Campaign. In the latter and in the later Atlanta Campaign he served as James B. McPherson's adjutant and received the brevet of Brigadier General for the battle of Atlanta where his chief was killed. During the Carolinas Campaign he was given a line command as an acting Brigadier General and was brevetted to Major General of Volunteers at the close of the war, as well as to the full rank of Brigadier General. Sent to Texas with Sheridan's forces, he proposed the acquisition of Matamoros to halt Maximilian's designs. Still holding his volunteer commission, he arrived in Texas, a full-blown carpetbagger. After helping to organize a bank in Galveston, he was soon closely allied with the leader of that town's Negroes, who succeeded in 1869 in electing him to the House of Representatives as an exponent of reconstructing Texas. He advocated the sale of West Texas lands for the benefit of the railroads in which he was reputed to have an interest. Defeated for reelection in 1871 by a Conservative Democrat, but certified by a corrupt Republican Governor who threw out more than 3,000 opposing votes, he was later expelled from the House of Representatives by a unaminous vote of both parties. He soon obtained a position in the Bureau of Revenue, which he occupied until he died in New York City. (bio by: Ugaalltheway)
