Stephen Gano Burbridge

Civil War Union Brigadier General. He attended Georgetown College and the Kentucky Military Institute, studied the law and set up a law practice in Georgetown, Kentucky. With the advent of the Civil War, he organized a group of volunteers, joined the Union Army and was commissioned Colonel of the 26th Kentucky Infantry. He led his regiment in action at Shiloh and was promoted to Brigadier General in June 1862. He commanded a brigade in the XIII Corps during the storming of Fort Hindman, Arkansas, also the Vicksburg Campaign and was placed in command of the District of Kentucky, in early 1864. For repulsing the Confederate's invasion of Kentucky, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on July 4, 1864. He was relieved of his command operations in Kentucky, in January 1865 and later resigned his commission. Following the war, he moved his family to Brooklyn, New York, where he lived until his death at age 63. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
