He called her 'Bill' and she was the grandmother I never knew.
Willie Jane married my grandfather, Henry Franklin Dowdy, Jr in 1910 and they divorced ten years later. Though they divorced, I know that he always loved her; a photo of her hang beside his bed for the rest of his days.
She took their two children (my dad and his sister) and traveled via train to the home of her parents in Estancia, NM. She was very ill with tuberculosis and died a year or two later. My dad remembers that after her death, his grandfather took her body in a wagon and buried it in the desert.
As it turns out, there is a small and now very overgrown cemetery not far from where they were living at the time of her death. Though I do not know the name of this cemeery, in my heart I am quite sure that is where she is buried.
