Obituary: Dieterich Special Gazette - April 28, 1927
Mrs. Sophia Westendorf passed away at the home of Jos. Bushue of near Elliottstown at about 2 a. m. after an illness of only a few hours. She had been enjoying fine health for a lady advanced in years, and was able to assist in the domestic duties of the home. On Friday however, Mrs. Westendorf did not feel quite as well as usual and became ill at about 9 o'clock. Mr. Bushue insisted on calling a physician but the deceased requested him not to, as she believed she would feel better shortly. When Mr. Bushue observed that she was quite ill, he called for the family physician, but because of the very bad roads he could not readily answer the call. Another call was made to Dieterich but the physician was out on a call, and before medical aid could be secured Mrs. Westendorf passed away.
The remains were brought to the Wright undertaking rooms in their new funeral coach and the inquest held Saturday morning, after which the body was removed to the home
Funeral services were conducted, Tuesday morning. The verdict of the inquest was that Mrs. Westendorf came to her death from acute indigestion.
Sophia Meyer was born in Cook county on November 15, 1863. She came to this community while very young and resided here continually until death. She was united in marriage to Fred Habing, to which two children were born, Mrs. George (Rose) Horn of Dieterich, and Fred Habing of Canada. Her husband died about 32 years ago, after which she was married to Henry Kraas, who died several years ago. She later was married to Henry Westendorf who died about two years ago.
Surviving besides her two children there remain to mourn, one adopted son, Dewey Kraas of Blue Island, six brothers, Tony Meyer of Flora, John J. Meyer of Dieterich, Herman and Cornelius Meyer of Seward, Neb., George Meyer of Bedford, Ind., Wm Meyer of Effingham, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral service occurred at the Immaculate Conception Church of Dieterich, Tuesday morning, Rev Oscar J. Wernett officiating, and interment was made in the parish cemetery. The spacious Church was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives who witnessed the last sad rites to their departed friend.
Those present from a distant were Fred Habing of Canada, Dewey Kraas and Lawrence Horn of Blue Island, Noah Kraas of Effingham, Jane Kabbes of Chicago, Rose Bruver, Effingham, Henry and Barney 1 Habing and Mrs. Clara Schleper of Teutopolis.
