He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and a Phi Delta Theta. In 1889 he was president of the City Bank and Trust Company and resided at 933 Government Street. He was treasurer of the Boys Club in 1908.
He moved to Mobile from New Orleans as did his brother William H. Buck. A third brother was Dr. Jeffries Buck of Baltimore. They were sons of Charles Edward Buck and Sarah Letitia Jefferies. Their grandfather William Richardson Buck, who married Maria Flower, was a fourth cousin of Dr. Willis Roberts of Mobile. Sarah Letitia Jeffries Buck was the daughter of Nathaniel and Catherine Cowan Jeffries; granddaughter of James Jeffries and Priscilla Shelby Jeffries.
E.J. Buck married Sarah Cawthon, a cousin of Mobile mayor R.V. Taylor's mother.
The Alabama Official and Statistical Register, p. 29:
"The family is of French and Scotch-Irish descent and are directly descended from Isaac Shelby, of Kings Mountain fame, War of Revolution. E.J. Buck was educated in the public and private schools of Port Gibson, Chamberlain Hunt Academy; and graduated in law dept. of University of Miss. with degree of LL.B. June, 1889. Was formerly in R.R. construction work for Texas and Pacific R.R. 1882-1887. Was cashier of National Bank of Pittsburg, Kansas, for one year, removed to Biloxi, Miss., and organized Bank of Biloxi; then removed to Mobile in 1899 and organized City National Bank, now City Bank and Trust Co., of which he is president. He is a Democrat; an Episcopalian; a 32d Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner; and a K. of P. He married at Mobile, Ala., Dec 1901 Sarah Estelle Cawthon, the daughter of Orville Franklin and Sarah (Cowan) Cawthon of Mobile, Ala."
