He was a catcher with the Chicago Cubs from 1941 to 1950 and for the Reds and Cardinals in 1950 and 1951. Following his playing years he managed the Cubs from 1957 to 1959 and the Detroit Tigers from 1961 to 1963. He finished his baseball career as general manager of New York Mets from 1971 to 1975.
