She was the author of the 1951 children's book "Amos Fortune, Free Man". A native of Buffalo, she used her maiden name as her pen name, Elizabeth Yates. Her historic 1951 novel was based on the life of a freed slave and it won the Newbery Medal for children's literature. The book is often used to educate children about black history and has been translated into several languages. During her career she received seven honorary degrees and many other literary awards.  (bio by: Ron Moody)
