Church of Ireland Archbishop. Born at Hannigton, Wiltshire, England, he was educated at Magdalen College at Oxford taking a degree in 1658. He was ordained in 1662 and awarded the living at Swindon. He became a fellow of Exeter College in 1671. He was appointed chaplain to the Bishop of Exeter and Clarendon and principal of St. Alban's Hall, Oxford in 1673. The 1st Duke of Ormond appointed him as provost of Trinity College, Dublin by January 1678 and he became an advocate of the study of the Irish language. He was a co-founder of the Dublin Philosophical Society. In 1683 he was consecrated Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin and rector of Killiban. Due to social unrest under James II, he fled to England in 1689, only returning to Ireland in 1691 when he was created Archbishop of Cashel, to be followed three years later with an appointment as Archbishop of Dublin. He established the first public library in Ireland at his palace while Trinity College library was inoperative, and built St Sepulchre's Library and garden in St Sepulchre's Close at St. Patrick's Cathedral. He served several times as Lord Justice of Ireland. He was translated to the Archbishopric of Armagh in 1703 and served until his death at 74 ten years later. (bio by: Iola)
