He was also a three-time veteran of the Indianapolis 500, winning the classic on his first attempt in 1966. His son Damon followed in his father's footsteps as a race driver. A commemorative banner was first displayed in his honor at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September 2001 on the occasion of the second annual United States Grand Prix race held there.
