In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Centre Township, Perry County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 24, 1864, as a private with Battery L, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his battery November 9, 1865.
He married Emily A. Crider in 1867 and fathered Emory Edward (b. @1868), William (b. @1874), Ella E. (b. @1877), and infant (b. 1880).
