Birth: Nov. 7, 1794
Duanesburg
Schenectady County
New York, USA
Death: Jan., 1872
Forestville
Chautauqua County
New York, USA

He was an active business man and a member of New York State Legislature.

Andrew Young’s History of Chautauqua County (Buffalo NY, 1875) noted that Nathaniel Gray moved with his father to Sheridan in 1818. In February 1824, Nathaniel Gray married Harriet Dewey (1796-1877). Young reported that Nathaniel Gray served as the Sheridan town supervisor in 1831, 1835 and 1838.

Gray also served as a justice of the peace and as a member of the State Assembly. According to Young, Gray “was by trade a tanner and currier and shoemaker, which business he carried on many years with a small farm. His health declining, he sold his property and removed to Silver Creek [Chautauqua County, NY], and after several years to Forestville.”

The deed registers show him purchasing in lot 44-6-11 in 1824 and extensively thereafter through 1845. From 1848 on his property purchases were all in Range 10, the last recorded purchase made in 1864. The Nathaniel Gray farm later became the Reuben Butler farm, who may be seen on the 1854 county map, and whose descendants remain there in 2015. The tannery and shoe shop were later run by J. Eckers, who may also be seen on the 1854 map. Gray died in Forestville (Chautauqua County) NY.
