Born Juan de Castilla y Aragón, Principe das Asturias in Seville, Spain, the only surviving son of Fernando II, King of Spain and Isabella I, Queen of Castilla. He was given the titles of Principe Juan das Asturias and Infante de Aragón. In order to secure an alliance, he and his sister, Juana, were betrothed to the children of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and at 18 he married Margarete Erzherzogin von Österreich in April 1497 at Burgos, Castile, Spain. The match was reportedly a very happy one, however short lived. Some six months after his wedding, while traveling to the wedding of his older sister in Portugal, he died at Salamanca.
