Birth: 1714
Glencastle Bridge
County Mayo, Ireland
Death: Aug. 4, 1785
Rowan County
North Carolina, USA

Archibald Wasson was a cordwainer and farmer, and the first known son of John Wasson (Weisen)(b.ABT 1700 Londonderry, Ireland, d. 7?/1777 Rowan Co, NC) and Mary Deemer. A cordwainer made luxury shoes and boots out of the finest leathers, where a cobbler repaired them. Archibald was born between 1714 and 1719 in Glencastle, Ireland, and died 8/4/1785 in Rowan Co, NC. He married twice. The 1st time was ABT 1739 in ROWAN Co, NC to Elizabeth Woods (b.?/?/1720 IRELAND) (North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868, Record #: 02 451, Bond #: 000130216). The 2nd time was to Anna King Lansden (widow) on 7/27/1769 in Rowan Co, NC. She was born 2/?/1729 in Philadelphia, PA to Richard King and his first wife, Mary Ann Bradford (b.?/?/1708 in Dublin, Dublin Region, Ireland, married on 5/15/1726 in Dublin, Dublin Region, Ireland). Richard King was born in 1705 in Dublin, Ireland. He died on 5/30/1782 in Rowan Co, NC, and was buried at Thyatira Church Cem, Rowan Co, NC. Richard King's second marriage was on 4/7/1735 on the Raritan River by Middlesex above New Brunswick, NJ to Margaret Barclay (b.1/9/1711 Freehold, Monmouth, NJ, d.7/7/1785 Rowan County, NC, buried at Thyatira Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mill Bridge, Rowan Co, NC). Archibald and Elizabeth (Woods) Wasson were living in Chester Co, PA prior to 1742. They lived in Fallowfield Township, Chester Co, PA in 1747. On 2/9/1761, Earl Granville let Archibald Wasson, a planter of Rowan Co, NC, have 415 acres of vacant land on the south side of Grant's Creek (in Rowan County's Irish Settlement) for ten shillings. Grant's Creek flows into the upper Yadkin River; it flows through the center of Salisbury, Concord, Kannopolis, Spencer, and China Grove. In 1769 Archibald and Elizabeth (Woods) Wasson acquired more land in Rowan Co, NC. By 1768 he had moved from his landholdings there to the area north of the South Yadkin River.

In "Barcelonia" Neckerchiefs, Teaware, and China Plates: Kinship, Status and the Division of Fourth Creek Church"
Joshua L. Mckaughan states, "During the early 1770's, Archibald Wasson, although possessing an estate valued far below that of either his grandson or son Joseph, sought to acquire several status-granting items. Like his grandson's purchase of fragile "China plates," Archibald Wasson invested in an equally breakable tea set, spending the extravagant sum of seven shillings. Equally lavish was his purchase of a "barselonia" neckerchief for himself, which, at the price of ten shillings, cost far more than the checked and printed neck cloths which adorned his neighbors."

Note: * The 1773 map of Fourth Creek Presbyterian Church made by William Sharpe places Archibald and Joseph Wasson on the Northwestern side, 10 or 12 miles from the church between the South Yadkin River and a small branch of Snow Creek.

* It seems that the Wasson, Purviance, Ireland, Morrison, and Mitchell families moved along together in their search for new land. The Purviance families are said to have come from Lancaster Co., Pa. These same surnames are present in Preble Co, OH along with the Sprowl family that also married into the Purviance family there. James Reid, (ancestor of Annette (Strange) Carroll). who married (3rd), Lavina Wasson, Great-Granddaughter of Archibald and Elizabeth (Woods) Wasson, was married (2nd) to Sarah Sprowl. The surname, Fleming is also connected with this family.

"Shortly after marriage, they settled on the south fork of the Yadkin River. Rowan (now Iredell) County, North Carolina. The country was new, but by industry and frugality, he procured a comfortable living for himself and family. He and his wife were both respectable members of the Presbyterian Church. He filled the office of Justice of the peace, for a number of years, with general approbation. At the commencement of the Revolutionary war, he volunteered in defence of his Country's Rights, and was appointed Lieutenant in the army. He behaved himself valiantly during the war, and was gradually promoted to the office of Colonel. He fought bravely for the liberty of his country, and rejoiced to see the Colony free. He returned with a thankful heart to the bosom of his family, and lived happily there until the fall of 1791. He moved with his family to Sumner County, Tennessee. The country there was almost a wilderness, and the savage barbarities of the Indians, much afflicted the small settlements, by stealing and taking away their horses, and murdering the citizens.

In the spring of 1792, his second son, John Purviance, while in the field at work, was shot, scalped, and left weltering in his blood by the Indians; he was so near the house, that his wife could hear their savage yells, and she would have run to her husband in the midst of them, had she not have been prevented by the interposition of her friends. They had been married but a few months. Their only child (a daughter) was born after his death. Col. John Purviance becoming alarmed at these savage cruelties, left the place and moved to Caneridge, Bourbon Co, KY, where the inhabitants were less exposed to the barbarities of the Indians. He continued to reside there until the fall of 1800. He then returned to Tennessee, and settled in Wilson County. During all this time he continued an exemplary member of the Presbyterian Church."

I suspect Archibald Wasson and Elizabeth Woods are also the grandparents of my 4th great grandmother Elizabeth 'Betsy' Wasson who married Rev. Robert Long, for the following reasons:

1. The Longs and McCreary's have a history of close association in North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, and Iowa. Ruth Wasson's husband, Rev. John Cephas McCreary performed the wedding ceremonies of two of Betsy Wasson's sons, Abner Nelson Long to Martha Jane Gale; and John Franklin Long to Sarah 'Sally' Alexander Patton. Both ceremonies were performed at the New Light Liberty Christian Church in Cynthiana, IN.

2. There are some three to four years before and after the birth of Archibald's granddaughter, Ruth Wasson, that Elizabeth could have been born. Since most young Ulster/Scot women of the time were married between 19 and 21, Elizabeth probably was Ruth Wasson's younger sister, marrying Robert Long in ABT 1800 in VA.

3. There was a naming practice among Ulster/Scots to name the second daughter after the father's mother in which Elizabeth 'Betsy' Wasson may have been named after Archibald's wife, Elizabeth Woods.
