| Birth: | Sep. 4, 1837 | | Death: | Sep. 17, 1919 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in four different Union Army units during his Civil War career. Entered the Union Army as a Sergeant in the 7th Indian Volunteer Infantry before receiving a commission as 1st Lieutenant of the 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. When the Union Army was authorized to recruit and equip African-Americans for service, he offered to become an officer in that branch. He then served first as the Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th United States Colored Troops, then as Colonel of the 109th United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war".
